Photographers a plenty

Recently I’ve been looking for an agent. And it’s more apparent just how many talented photographers there are out there. And they aren’t household names like they used to be. Why are there so many talented folk out there?

Access to equipment?

Higher population?

Stronger demand?

When I was pouring over fashion magazines in the 90s and early 2000s I remember few photographers that stood out in the game and even fewer journalistic or magnum photographers that truly made a visual impact.

Now there are thousands of photographers who are outstanding. THOUSANDS who are highly highly recommended and even more than are at least above average.

What does it take to be a stand out image maker these days?

Do you have to be multiple disciplinary? Must you know video as well and be a director? How does one create stand out visuals now that we (the meer looker) see’s hundreds of images a day. And that’s just before noon.

It can all be a bit paralyzing. What’s more paralyzing is advice on how to be one of the top photographers. Don’t do this with you website, do this with your Instagram. Make videos of your work or you’ll never be seen. Cold email, don’t cold email…. Finding our way in the world as artists AND business owners is overwhelming at best. But one thing is feeling extra clear. I’m ready to make a visual impact on the world. Regardless of the overwhelming mountain of work and advice in front of me.
